Our Paints
What paints do you make?
We make three ranges of premium paint, all crafted in England:
- Interior Emulsion — a richly pigmented flat matt emulsion for walls and ceilings, available in 2.5L tins and hand-painted A6 sample cards.
- Front Door Paint — an ultra-durable satin finish for exterior wood and metal doors, available in 750ml tins and hand-painted A6 sample cards.
- Masonry Paint — a durable exterior paint for brick, render, and stone, available in 2.5L and 5L tins and hand-painted A6 sample cards.
We also offer a Pro Primer & Undercoat for exterior woodwork and a Masonry Primer for exterior walls.
What finish does each paint have?
Our Interior Emulsion dries to a beautifully flat matt finish. Our Front Door Paint and Masonry Paint both dry to a durable satin finish. All three ranges deliver exceptional depth of colour thanks to our high pigment formulation.
Are your paints low VOC?
Yes. Our Interior Emulsion has an ultra-low VOC content of less than 1g/l, contributing to healthier indoor air quality. Our exterior paints are also formulated with low VOCs. All our paints are water-based, vegan-friendly, and eco-conscious.
Are your paints safe for children's bedrooms and nurseries?
Yes. Our Interior Emulsion is ultra-low VOC (less than 1g/l), water-based, and virtually odourless once dry. It is safe for use in bedrooms, nurseries, and living spaces throughout your home.
Where are your paints made?
Every tin of Knuckles paint is expertly mixed to order in England. We use traditional craftsmanship alongside modern formulation technology to ensure the highest standards of quality and consistency.
Coverage and Application
How much Interior Emulsion do I need?
One litre of our Interior Emulsion covers approx. 14 square metres. A single 2.5L tin will cover approx. 35 square metres, which is typically enough for a medium-sized room (walls only) in two coats. For a more precise estimate, measure the total wall area and deduct windows and doors.
How much Front Door Paint do I need?
One 750ml tin is enough to paint one standard front door with two coats. If you are also painting the door frame, you may need a second tin depending on the size of the frame.
How much Masonry Paint do I need?
Coverage depends on the texture of your surface. On smooth render, one litre covers approx. 10 square metres. On rough or textured surfaces such as pebbledash or exposed brick, coverage may be lower. We recommend two coats for the best finish.
How do I prepare my walls for Interior Emulsion?
Ensure walls are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or loose material. Fill any cracks or holes with a suitable filler and sand smooth. On new plaster, apply a mist coat first (our emulsion thinned with 10-20% clean water). On previously painted surfaces in good condition, you can apply directly.
How do I prepare my front door for painting?
Remove any loose or flaking paint by sanding. Clean the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. For bare wood, apply our Pro Primer & Undercoat first. For previously painted doors in good condition, a light sand and clean is sufficient before applying two coats of our Front Door Paint.
How do I prepare masonry for painting?
Remove any loose material, moss, or algae with a stiff brush and treat with a fungicidal wash if needed. Allow to dry fully. On bare or powdery masonry, apply our Masonry Primer first. On previously painted surfaces in good condition, clean thoroughly before applying two coats.
What are the drying times?
Our Interior Emulsion is touch dry in 2 hours and ready for a second coat after 4 hours. Our Front Door Paint is touch dry in 1-2 hours and recoatable after 4-6 hours. We recommend painting in dry conditions above 10°C for exterior products, and allowing adequate ventilation for interior work.
How many coats do I need?
We recommend two coats of all our paints for optimal depth of colour and durability. When painting over a dramatically different colour, a third coat may be needed. For exterior woodwork, always prime bare surfaces first with our Pro Primer & Undercoat.
Do I need a primer?
For interior walls that have been previously painted and are in good condition, no primer is needed. For new or bare plaster, apply a mist coat. For exterior doors, use our Pro Primer & Undercoat on bare or exposed wood. For masonry, use our Masonry Primer on bare, powdery, or unstable surfaces.
Is your Interior Emulsion wipeable?
Yes. Our Interior Emulsion features Class 1 wet scrub resistance, meaning you can gently wipe marks and scuffs without damaging the finish. Use a soft damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners.
Colour Samples
Do you offer colour samples?
Yes. We offer hand-painted A6 colour sample cards for every colour in our range. Each sample is painted by hand with the actual paint, so what you see on the card is exactly what you will see on your wall, door, or exterior surface. Samples are the best way to see how a colour works with your light and furnishings before committing to a full tin.
How do I get a free sample?
Your first sample is free when you sign up for colour inspiration emails on any product page. Simply enter your email address and your free hand-painted sample card will be sent to you. Additional samples are available for a small charge.
How should I use my sample card?
Hold or tape the sample card against the surface you plan to paint. View it at different times of day, as colours shift significantly between morning light, afternoon sun, and artificial lighting in the evening. Try it against your existing furniture, flooring, and fabrics to see how the colour works in context.
How long do samples take to arrive?
Sample orders are dispatched within 24 hours via Royal Mail 1st Class, so you should receive yours within 1-3 working days.
Ordering and Delivery
How long does delivery take?
Paint orders are dispatched within 48 hours and delivered within 2-4 working days via our specialist paint courier. Sample orders are dispatched within 24 hours via Royal Mail 1st Class.
Where do you deliver?
We deliver to all UK addresses including the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Scottish Highlands and Islands, Northern Ireland, and BFPO addresses. Deliveries to remote areas may take an additional 3-5 working days.
Do you offer free delivery?
Yes. Orders over £150 qualify for free delivery, applied automatically at checkout with no code to enter. Orders under £150 are charged at our standard rates: £5.95 for paint and £2.50 for samples.
Will I receive tracking information?
Yes. You will receive an email with tracking details when your order is dispatched. You can also track your order by logging into your Knuckles account.
Is every tin mixed to order?
Yes. Every tin of Knuckles paint is freshly mixed when you place your order. This means you always receive the freshest possible product with the richest pigment quality.
Returns and Issues
Can I return paint I have ordered?
Because every tin is mixed to order specifically for you, we are unable to offer refunds or exchanges on paint orders. We strongly recommend ordering a sample card first to confirm your colour choice before purchasing a full tin.
What if my order arrives damaged?
If your paint arrives damaged or leaking, please contact us at help@knucklespaints.com within 48 hours of delivery with photographs of the damage. We will arrange a replacement as quickly as possible.
What if the colour does not match my sample?
Our sample cards are hand-painted with the same paint used in our tins, so the colour match is accurate. However, colour can appear different depending on lighting conditions, wall texture, and the number of coats applied. If you believe there is a genuine colour discrepancy, please get in touch and we will look into it.
Sustainability
What makes Knuckles different from other paint brands?
We combine high pigment formulation with heritage British craftsmanship and a commitment to sustainability. Our paints are mixed to order (reducing waste), low in VOCs, water-based, and vegan-friendly. We use recyclable metal tins and minimal plastic packaging.
Are your paints eco-friendly?
Yes. Our paints are low VOC, water-based, and vegan-friendly. Our packaging uses durable metal tins (reusable and recyclable) and recycled cardboard for shipping. We keep plastic use to an absolute minimum.
Can I recycle the tin?
Yes. Our metal paint tins are fully recyclable once empty. They can also be reused for storing leftover paint, brushes, or household items.
